New Authority Trucking Insurance
Starting a trucking company? See what new-authority carriers usually need before hauling: DOT and MC numbers, insurance filings and premium factors.
A practical checklist for starting a for-hire trucking company, and where insurance fits into the process.
What “new authority” means
A new authority is a motor carrier that has just obtained, or is applying for, its own operating authority to haul regulated freight for hire. Until the authority is active and insurance is on file, the carrier cannot legally operate under it.
Typical steps before you can haul
Rules and forms change, so use the FMCSA registration pages as the source of truth for your situation.
- USDOT number identifies your company to the FMCSA.
- Operating authority (MC number) generally needed to haul regulated freight for hire across state lines.
- Process agent (BOC-3) a filing that names legal process agents for each state.
- Insurance filing your insurer files proof of required liability coverage with the FMCSA.
- State and tax registrations these are separate from insurance; confirm them with the FMCSA and your state.
Liability limits to plan for
Federal minimum liability for for-hire interstate carriers hauling non-hazardous property in vehicles of 10,001 lbs or more is $750,000, and higher for oil and certain hazardous materials. Many brokers and shippers ask for $1,000,000 regardless of the federal minimum, so check the contracts you plan to take.
Why new ventures often pay more
Insurers price on experience. A company with no operating history has no claims record to show, so underwriters look closely at the owner’s driving record, CDL experience, the equipment, the cargo and the planned radius. A clean driving record and a well-defined operation make for a stronger application.
What to prepare for a quote
- Owner and driver details name, date of birth and CDL number.
- Your numbers USDOT number (if issued) and any operating authority information.
- Operation cargo type, local or interstate, expected radius.
- Equipment truck and trailer year, make, model and VIN.
- Coverage wanted liability and cargo limits, and physical damage values if needed.
Questions
Can I get insurance before my authority is active?
You can request a quote while you are setting up. The insurance filing is part of activating your authority, so timing matters. Tell us where you are in the process.
How much liability do I need to start?
The federal minimum for most for-hire interstate general freight is $750,000, but many brokers and shippers require $1,000,000. Check your contracts and the current FMCSA rules.
Does the agency handle my DOT or MC registration?
No. Registration is done with the FMCSA. We can help with the insurance side and point you to what you will need to provide.
